THE WALL COLLECTION: PEAT EDITION

A work of art inside and out
Laura Carlin illustrator and ceramicist at Laphroaig distillery

We’re delighted to introduce The Wall Collection to you, a limited series of rare expressions capturing the people, perseverance and passion which have defined Laphroaig since 1815.

The first release in the series is Peat, putting the very lifeblood of Laphroaig’s character front and centre in every way. It’s wholly different to anything we’ve released in the last few decades. A special liquid deserves a special bottle, and that’s what we’re doing with every release in this series.

Peat is limited to just 200 bottles worldwide, making it a highly coveted collector’s item. All are hand painted by artist Laura Carlin in black and white paint, just like the iconic black LAPHROAIG lettering that has been overlooking the bay from Warehouse No.1 for almost 30 years.

To ensure all our Friends get an equal opportunity to own one of these unique hand-painted bottles, we’ll be using an online ballot system for purchases. Read more below to find out how the ballot works.

This unique and limited edition is available via ballot only to Friends of Laphroaig. Unfortunately the ballot is now closed but to be the first to know about future releases sign up to become a Friend of Laphroaig today.

“Sturdy. Textural. Atmospheric.  Like the wall, they’ve been given a fresh lick of paint: asking to be weathered and kept and looked after.” – Laura Carlin

Laura Carlin is an award-winning illustrator and ceramicist from London. In her own words, she loves to create stories around physical objects, and whatever medium she works in, she relishes the opportunity to explore themes of history, people and iconography.

The bespoke artwork she has created on every single one of the 200 bottles of The Wall Collection: Peat is inspired by the peat bricks we use to cold-smoke our barley, their distinctive shapes criss-crossing in simple yet beautiful patterns across a tangibly textured white paint.

The exact paint, in fact, that our warehouse painter Sammy uses every year to paint the iconic LAPHROAIG on the wall of Warehouse No.1, a job he has been doing ever since he was an apprentice at 15 years old. Laura wanted to capture the feel of our 113-year-old warehouse, and how it sits in the beautiful bay as “a solid symbol of both permanence and change”.

Laphroaig THE WALL COLLECTION: PEAT bottle

A symbol of Laphroaig for so many decades, the wall of Warehouse No.1 is brimming with yet-untold history. It is seen by so many visitors to our distillery but what has the wall itself seen across all that time? How many changes of weather, how many distinct characters, and how many countless layers of paint? These are the questions and potential answers that Laura hopes to communicate to anyone who holds this bottle of whisky in their hands.

Sitting right on the shoreline of the bay, the wall that boasts the iconic black LAPHROAIG lettering weathers sea spray and wind and rain, day after day, and sits on foundations that date back to the 1800s. The wall of Warehouse No.1 is strong, enduring, and full of character. Just like our whisky.

“Growing up in the village, back then everyone was burning peat, so walking around the distillery really takes me back to childhood.” – Barry MacAffer

It’s the peat in our kilns that give our whisky its unique, phenolic flavour. We cold-smoke our barley using the peat to prevent any flame coming through and getting too hot. The distinctive peaty smoke infuses into our barley and the flavour it imparts into every drop of Laphroaig is what makes us, well, us.

The type of cask we finish our liquids in determines some of the flavour profiles you can smell and taste. Our Laphroaig 10, for instance, is matured in ex-Bourbon casks, which give it a subtle smoky flavour. The Wall Collection: Peat has been finished in heavily peated ex-Laphroaig casks which reintroduces those signature hints of smoke at the final stages of ageing, delivering notes of soft leather and cinnamon spice. As Barry wisely says, casks are like fingerprints – they’re all unique.

And like the peated casks in which this 36-year-old single malt was matured, each bottle of The Wall Collection: Peat has a life and identity of its own.

FAQs

Why is there a ballot instead of buying the bottle like usual?

With a limited number of bottles available, a ballot ensures that everyone gets a fair chance to buy one. This minimises the risk of scammers swooping in and buying up the stock, and ensures that the bottles go to good homes with our true Friends.

Can I enter more than once for an extra chance?

Entries are limited to one per person. We want all our Friends to have a fair chance of winning this exclusive limited edition, so we have limited entries to ensure the draw remains as fair as possible.

Why do you need my credit card details when I enter?

We ask for credit/debit card details as a security measure to make sure you’re not a bot. This keeps the ballot fair for everyone entering and also enables us to make sure there hasn’t been any fraudulent activity associated with the card.

If you’re successful in the ballot, you’ll then be automatically charged on the card details you provide, so there’s nothing extra you have to do.

Who runs the ballot?

Our ballot is being run by EQL, a trusted platform that keeps launches fair and secure. All launches run by EQL are certified Run FAIR™, which you can read more about on their website.

Do I purchase directly from EQL?

No, EQL are running the launch on our behalf, but you’ll be purchasing directly from Laphroaig. EQL can’t answer any product or delivery enquiries.

How do I find out if I am a winner?

If you’ve been successful in the ballot, we’ll contact you by email to confirm. At the same time, the card details you registered with will be charged. Then, you’ll soon be the lucky owner of an exclusive hand-painted bottle of 36-year-old Laphroaig from the Wall Collection.
